Medellin Travel Tips | How to Get Around the City

A road sign in Medellin. Is it your first time in Medellin? Get to know the way around.

Pueblito Paisa, Barrio Manila, El Poblado, Parque Explora, and Plaza Cizneros are just some of the top attractions in Medellin. With plenty of cultural, historical, and natural sites to choose from, it’s no wonder why millions of tourists visit the city each year.

If there’s one place in Latin America you ought to strike off of your travel bucket list, it should definitely be this city. Incidentally, you can also find the most beautiful Colombia women in Medellin. So aside from getting to enjoy a unique Colombian city, you might also just run into your ideal girl.

Once you decide to go there, getting around might get a little confusing. But don’t you worry, here’s a list of how you can get around the city:

  • MetroPlus
  • The MetroPlus is Medellin’s bus rapid transit system (BRT) and is part of their Metro transport system. It currently has three lines, namely West to the East via Ave. Del Ferrocarril, West to East via Ave. Oriental, and Envigado to Itagui.

While they all have different routes, all of them have designated stops near the Metro and MetroCable stations. However, in order to board them, you have to flag them down on official stops or waiting areas (they won’t take passengers on random sidewalks). They also operate for a limited time from 4:30 am to 11:00 pm.

  • Metro Line
  • This line is comprised of the train and the cable cars which runs from North to South and Center to West. There are two major lines (A and B) with a total of 27 stations, some of which stop at the city’s top tourist attractions. The cable cars are set up mainly to provide easier access to the more mountainous parts of the city. Whether you board the train or the cable car, you have to get a UniViajes pass.

  • Taxi
  • When you are running out of time, you can always hail a cab. They are relatively cheaper compared to the taxis in the States. They even have an app (EasyTaxi) which gives you a list of registered taxi drivers and allows you to book a ride with any of them.

Since you are a tourist, it still helps to be cautious. There will be drivers that would take advantage because you are a foreigner by taking the long route in order to boost his fare. To avoid this, it helps to know the most direct route to your destination and instruct the driver to go that way.

  • Tram
  • Their tram system is considered the fastest mode of transport within the Aburra Valley in Antioquia. The tram system has nine stations, namely San Antonio, San Jose, EPM Water Pavilion, Bicentenario, Buenos Aires, Miraflores, Loyola, Alejandro Echevarria, and Oriente. Unlike the Metro Lines where all you need is a pass, the tram is more old-fashioned in a sense that you have to pay your fare before boarding.

These modern and comprehensive modes of transportation is one of the reasons it is safe to get around the Medellin. By familiarizing these modes of transport, your tour around Medellin will be a lot more convenient and pleasant. When you know how to get around, you’ll find it easier to meet Colombian singles and enjoy the Medellin, Colombia nightlife - an experience you should never miss when visiting the city
